Horse Rescues and Sanctuaries
It's only with your help that these sanctuaries can make a difference in the lives of horses. Please consider adopting or sponsoring one of these precious animals, or discover other ways to make a difference at one of these Minnesota sanctuaries.

Healing Hearts & Hooves
I started an animal rescue in 2012, and with the help of a ton of absolutely amazing people, have saved over 3500 dogs and cats. I began rescuing horses in 2016. I have saved horses from kill buyers, auctions, and have also taken in owner surrenders. I currently own 26 horses/donkeys of my own- they were either adopted through a horse rescue/ rescued from the slaughter pipeline or were owner surrenders. In 2019, I fell in love with the Belgian breed and have since acquired 10 draft breeds. My home is a retirement home for these gentle giants- none will ever work again, except possible light riding. I decided we need to expand and begin saving horses to place in foster homes and find them their forever homes. With the help of my husband, sister, and a few close friends, we are making this dream come true! As this organization grows, we would like to welcome those with disabilities and those that suffer from PTSD to spend time with our equine friends! We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit in the state of Minnesota- All of your donations are tax deductible!

Broken Roads Ranch
Broken Roads Ranch was created to rescue and give sanctuary to abused/neglected and unwanted farm animals. Many farm animals come from homes where they can no longer care for an animal; that is what we are here for. Each year thousands of unwanted farm animals and hobby farm animals die from neglect. We opened our sanctuary to give people the option to have a safe caring place to surrender their animal. We strive to provide a safe haven for all animals and create the human/animal bond.

Farmaste Animal Sanctuary
At Farmaste Animal Sanctuary we believe that all animals have inherent worth, and that farm animals are not an exception to that rule. We rescue abused, neglected and unwanted farm animals and bring them to our 79-acre farm in Lindstrom, MN. There they are allowed to roam in the pastures, and live out their days free from cruelty. Farmaste Animal Sanctuary also provides opportunities for people to connect with the animals and hear their stories through our scheduled tours and volunteer opportunities.

Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation
Since 1994, the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation in Zimmerman, Minnesota, has been rescuing, rehabilitating, retraining and re-homing horses and other animals in distress. Just as dozens of humane societies offer dogs and cats a second chance at a loving home, our foundation finds permanent, caring adoptive homes for horses and other animals. Some of our horses and other animals are young and sound. Others are injured, ill due to extreme neglect, starved, or simply very old.

Sundown Horse Rescue
When the difficult decision is made to part with a horse due to hardship or other circumstances Sundown will offer hope as an alternative to euthanasia or sending a horse to the slaughterhouse by finding temporary and then permanent homes. Sundown can also assist in finding solutions and alternatives to slaughter such as free stallion castration, hay assistance and temporary foster care if you are unable to host your horse or want to find a new home yourself. We also find, rescue and re-home unwanted horses from inhumane and unhealthy situations. Sundown Horse Rescue is a registered 501 (c)-(3) charitable organization listed on the American Horse Council's unwanted horse coalition.

This Old Horse
This Old Horse is a private, volunteer-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide support and sanctuary to retired, rescued, and recovering horses while they continue to serve as ambassadors to the positive effect of "horse power" in the lives of people.
Our mission is to create a sanctuary for aged or unwanted horses who have served us well. We are a retirement refuge for horses who, alongside their human professionals, have worked hard for a living. As these horses age, time and effort take their toll, and they are no longer capable of full-time work. Often their owners or handlers must move them out to make room for more able-bodied replacements.
We give these veterans a safe harbor for life where they may age in place, loved, honored and respected to the end.
We are an accredited and Certified Rescue and help abused, neglected and abandoned horses recover. We also support horses whose owners have experienced hardship and are unable to care for them as well as horses who need rehabilitation services to recover from injury.

Misfit Acres
Misfit Acres is a 501c3 sanctuary and rescue which provides a permanent home where formerly "unlucky" horses can live out their remaining years safe from abuse and neglect. Horses that arrive at Misfit Acres will live out their remaining years here. We believe they enjoy being here as much as we enjoy having them. They seem to know that they are the “stars” here and most of the cars that drive in are visitors for them.

Refuge Ranch
Refuge Ranch is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that was founded in 2014 to fulfill a community need to provide a place of refuge for rescued equines and at-risk youth. In the past five years, RRM has witnessed countless miracles of horses bringing healing and growth to children and children to horses. Among our goals is to facilitate horses to reduce the likeliness of youth using drugs and alcohol, high school dropout rates, teenage pregnancies, suicidal attempts, and/or incarceration. Another goal of our organization is to provide a home for equines that (against no fault of their own) end up in dire situations, such as being destined for the slaughterhouse or with an unknowledgeable owner who is putting the horse at-risk of painful and unnecessary death.

Resthaven Horse Rescue
Resthaven Horse Rescue, located in Cannon Falls, MN was founded in December 2015 by three ordinary horsewomen whose love of horses led them to an extraordinary mission: To turn what some would call ‘worthless’ horses into loved and valued equine partners, to be compassionate champions of neglected and abused horses and to do everything in their power to save as many of these majestic, gentle creatures as humanly possible. They further benefit horses of all shapes and sizes by giving them a second chance at life as well as a future. Their goal is to improve the life of equines by educating, networking and offering assistance to owners, rehabilitating abused and neglected equines, working with law enforcement and most importantly placing them into safe, loving permanent homes where they can live their years in peace while bringing love and companionship to those who care for them.
